What WIP means
WIP is the value of unbilled work sitting in the practice. It grows when jobs stay open, when scope creeps without a fee change, or when billing is left until a job is fully finished.
High WIP usually signals a workflow problem rather than a billing problem: jobs waiting on client records, review queues or unclear ownership.
