HMRC sign-in & agent services
Accountants sign in to HMRC through HMRC online services (Government Gateway or GOV.UK One Login). Agent work runs through an agent services account, which you apply for once and then use to request client authorisations. Individuals use a personal tax account; businesses use a business tax account.

HMRC registrations
Register clients with HMRC on GOV.UK: Self Assessment, VAT, PAYE as an employer and CIS each have their own service. Use HMRC’s tools to find a lost UTR, check a VAT number and check employment status. Trusts register through the Trust Registration Service.

Paying HMRC
Each HMRC tax has its own bank account and reference format. Self Assessment and Corporation Tax use HMRC Cumbernauld or Shipley; VAT uses HMRC VAT (08 32 00, 11963155); PAYE uses HMRC Cumbernauld. Always use the right reference and check GOV.UK and the HMRC letter before paying.

Companies House
Companies House services live on GOV.UK and the Find and update company information service. Use them to search companies, register a company, file confirmation statements and accounts, verify identity, register as an ACSP and apply for or object to strike-off. Private company accounts are due 9 months after year end.

Making Tax Digital
MTD for Income Tax is mandatory from 6 April 2026 for sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000, falling to £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028. Use GOV.UK to check who must join, sign clients up and choose compatible software. VAT-registered businesses already use MTD for VAT.

Payroll & pensions
Payroll teams rely on GOV.UK for rates and thresholds, minimum wage rates, Basic PAYE Tools, payroll software lists, P11D reporting and statutory pay calculators. Workplace pension duties and declarations of compliance are handled through The Pensions Regulator.
8 links
AML, data protection & regulators
Accountancy firms must be supervised for anti-money laundering by HMRC or a professional body such as ICAEW, ACCA or AAT, and most must pay the ICO data protection fee. Use the NCA for suspicious activity reports and GOV.UK for the UK sanctions list. AML supervision is expected to move to the FCA from around late 2028.

Rates, tools & reference
The official sources for UK tax rates are on GOV.UK: Income Tax rates and allowances, VAT rates, Corporation Tax rates, approved mileage rates and HMRC interest rates. HMRC’s internal manuals explain how HMRC applies the law. Remindoo also offers free calculators and checklists.

Penalties, appeals & disputes
Appeal HMRC penalties and decisions through GOV.UK’s tax appeals guidance, usually within 30 days. Check whether the circumstances are a reasonable excuse first. For poor service, complain to HMRC. If an appeal fails, you can ask for a review or go to the First-tier Tribunal (Tax).

How do I pay HMRC? Bank details by tax
See it working with your own clients
Client references, payment reminders and deadlines in one place.
Keep all of this inside your practice management software
Store each client’s UTR, VAT number, PAYE reference, Accounts Office reference and Corporation Tax payment reference in custom fields on the client record. Create one payment instructions email template with tokens that fill in each client’s own reference, then send it to one client or in bulk before each deadline. Set automated reminders and recurring tasks for every payment date, and pull filing deadlines with Companies House sync. Remindoo doesn’t submit filings, take payments or connect to HMRC — it keeps the references and the reminders in one place.

Frequently asked questions
Are these links official?
Yes. Every link goes to GOV.UK, Companies House, The Pensions Regulator, the ICO, the NCA or a professional body. We check each link automatically and remove any that break or move to a different page.
What are HMRC’s bank details for Self Assessment?
HMRC Cumbernauld (08 32 10, 12001039) or HMRC Shipley (08 32 10, 12001020), using the 10-digit UTR followed by K. Always check GOV.UK and the client’s bill before paying.
What are HMRC’s VAT bank details?
HMRC VAT, sort code 08 32 00, account number 11963155, with the 9-digit VAT number as the reference. Check GOV.UK before paying.
Why are there no phone numbers?
HMRC and Companies House change their phone numbers and add new lines. We link to their official contact pages instead so you always get the current number.
How can I store every client’s HMRC references in one place?
Use custom fields on the client record. In Remindoo you can store the UTR, VAT number, PAYE and Accounts Office references and Corporation Tax payment reference, and use them as tokens in emails.
How can I send payment instructions to all clients before 31 January?
Create an email template with tokens for each client’s name and UTR, then send it in bulk to your Self Assessment clients. Pair it with an automated reminder so it goes out every year.

Why recording every task matters in an accountancy practice
Accounting firms run on deadlines: VAT returns, payroll, confirmation statements, accounts and Self Assessment. Recording every job as a task, with an owner and a date, is the simplest way to make sure nothing is missed.
Avoid penalties
HMRC and Companies House charge penalties for late filing. A task for every deadline, with an internal date before it, gives the team a buffer.
Nothing depends on memory
Recorded tasks mean work continues when someone is off sick, on leave or has left the firm.
Consistent quality
Subtask checklists make every job follow the same steps and reviews, whoever does the work.
Visibility for managers
Filters by owner, status and deadline show at a glance what is late, what is due and who needs help.
Practical tips from UK practice
- Set an internal deadline two to four weeks before every statutory deadline.
- Use recurring tasks for repeat work such as VAT, payroll and bookkeeping.
- Break larger jobs into subtasks, including a review step.
- Comment on the task instead of by email, so the history stays with the work.
