UK Accountancy Bodies: Qualifications and Practice Licences

How ICAEW, ACCA, AAT and ICB approach qualifications and licensing for members who want to offer services to the public. Requirements change, so always confirm the current rules on each body's website.

Our recommendation: Remindoo does not recommend starting an accountancy or bookkeeping business without the right qualifications or body membership, a practising licence where required, AML supervision and professional indemnity insurance. Check your position with an accountancy body or experienced peers before taking on clients.

ICAEW

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales awards the ACA qualification. Members who want to carry on public practice generally need an ICAEW practising certificate, and the institute acts as AML supervisor for its member firms.

  • Qualification: ACA
  • Licence: ICAEW practising certificate
  • Protected designation: Chartered Accountant

ACCA

The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants awards the ACCA qualification. Members offering public practice services generally need an ACCA practising certificate, and ACCA supervises member firms for AML.

  • Qualification: ACCA
  • Licence: ACCA practising certificate
  • Protected designation: Chartered Certified Accountant

AAT

The Association of Accounting Technicians offers accounting and bookkeeping qualifications. Full members who want to work for themselves can apply to its licensing scheme, and AAT supervises licensed members for AML.

  • Qualification: AAT accounting qualifications
  • Licence: AAT Licensed Accountant or Licensed Bookkeeper
  • Membership level: full member (MAAT) or above

ICB

The Institute of Certified Bookkeepers focuses on bookkeeping qualifications. Members who want to offer bookkeeping to the public can apply for a practice licence, and ICB supervises licensed members for AML.

  • Qualification: ICB bookkeeping qualifications
  • Licence: ICB practice licence
  • Focus: bookkeeping and payroll services

Frequently asked questions

Which body should I join?

It depends on your qualifications and the services you plan to offer. Speak to the body directly and to peers already in practice with that body.

Can my body act as my AML supervisor?

ICAEW, ACCA, AAT and ICB are all recognised AML supervisory bodies for their members in practice. If you are not supervised by a body, you must register with HMRC.

Do all bodies require professional indemnity insurance?

Bodies generally require members in practice to hold PI insurance at set minimum levels. Check the current requirements with your body.

Built for UK practice growth

Every deadline. Every client. One system.

Start with the workflows that cause the most chasing, then bring leads, AML, proposals and clients into the same calm operating system.

Why recording every task matters in an accountancy practice

Accounting firms run on deadlines: VAT returns, payroll, confirmation statements, accounts and Self Assessment. Recording every job as a task, with an owner and a date, is the simplest way to make sure nothing is missed.

Avoid penalties

HMRC and Companies House charge penalties for late filing. A task for every deadline, with an internal date before it, gives the team a buffer.

Nothing depends on memory

Recorded tasks mean work continues when someone is off sick, on leave or has left the firm.

Consistent quality

Subtask checklists make every job follow the same steps and reviews, whoever does the work.

Visibility for managers

Filters by owner, status and deadline show at a glance what is late, what is due and who needs help.

Practical tips from UK practice

  • Set an internal deadline two to four weeks before every statutory deadline.
  • Use recurring tasks for repeat work such as VAT, payroll and bookkeeping.
  • Break larger jobs into subtasks, including a review step.
  • Comment on the task instead of by email, so the history stays with the work.
