In short: Identifying and verifying who your client is, who owns them, and what work you are being asked to do.

What CDD means

Customer due diligence is the standard set of checks you complete before acting for a client: confirm their identity from reliable evidence, identify any beneficial owners, understand the purpose of the relationship and assess the money laundering risk.

For an individual that usually means a verified photo ID and proof of address, or an electronic identity check. For a company it also means the ownership structure, the people with significant control and the identity of whoever instructs you.

Why it matters in practice

Acting before CDD is complete is one of the clearest breaches a monitoring visit can find, and the fix is almost always process rather than judgement.
