What Reasonable excuse means
HMRC accepts excuses such as serious illness, bereavement, a service failure in HMRC's own systems, or an unexpected event genuinely outside the taxpayer's control, provided the obligation was met without unreasonable delay afterwards.
It does not normally cover relying on someone else to file, not having the money, finding the return too difficult, or not receiving a reminder.
