In short: Removal of a company from the register, either voluntarily or compulsorily by Companies House.
Voluntary strike off uses form DS01 where a company is no longer needed. Compulsory strike off follows persistent failure to file accounts or confirmation statements, and is advertised in the Gazette.
A compulsory strike off can normally be suspended by bringing filings up to date and asking Companies House to stop the process, but time is short once the notice is published.
A struck-off company's assets pass to the Crown, so a missed Gazette notice can cause real client loss.
