Tax, HMRC & agent access
In short: The HMRC form or digital equivalent by which a client authorises you to deal with HMRC for them.
Form 64-8 covers agent authorisation across taxes. Most firms now use the digital handshake instead: you request authorisation online, HMRC posts a code to the client, and the client approves it.
Authorisation is service-specific. Being authorised for Self Assessment does not authorise you for VAT, PAYE or Corporation Tax.
Codes expire and letters get lost, so tracking the request date as a task is what keeps onboarding moving.
