PEP status triggers enhanced due diligence. It covers current and recent holders of prominent public functions — ministers, senior civil servants, senior judiciary, senior military, board members of state-owned enterprises — plus immediate family and known close associates.
Domestic PEPs should be treated on a risk-sensitive basis; the point is a considered assessment and a record of it, not automatic refusal.
Small practices often assume they have no PEPs, but the definition reaches councillors' families and public-sector directors more often than expected.
